Riveting Reads: Boys into Books 11-14

How do I use the booklist?

Advice on strategies for getting boys reading, using the booklist, is provided by Alec Williams in the Introduction.

If you want a printed version (hard copy) of the publication, you should download and print out the PDF file.

Alternatively, the publication can be read online - just use the menus at the top of each Boys into Books page to navigate through it. As well as reading the Foreword and Introduction, you can browse the booklist, search (using the search box at the top of every page) and view lists sorted by author, title and category.

How do I order the 20 free books?

The 20 free titles funded by the DfES were available between mid May and mid September 2007 to state schools in England having at least 20 boys in the age group 11-14. Orders were processed by Peters Bookselling Services. All orders for the 20 free titles had to be received by 14 September 2007. Ordering and registration for this scheme has now closed.

Key to the list (by Eileen Armstrong)

There's no such thing as a reluctant reader, there are only readers for whom the right book has not yet been found (Paul Jennings) Bearing this in mind, every effort has been made in compiling this publication to offer something for everyone whatever their reading experience, ability and attitude to reading. We've aimed at a range of books which allow every boy to see themselves reflected, a collection which caters for avid, enthusiastic readers as well as occasional and 'books are boring' readers. The majority of books are paperbacks and the latest in their series, so your collection can be bang up-to-date.

The following selection guides are included:

Title for those with reading difficulties are for those with reading difficulties; reading age is included in the annotation

Easy Read is an easy read in either content or style

More challenging reading is more challenging reading

Audio version available indicates audio version available.

Of course the attraction of lists like these is that not everything can be included and some favourites have inevitably had to be left out. This is of course guaranteed to open up hours of passionate debate with boys, and no doubt girls too, in your school. Get reading!

I have registered but can't get back in to the site

Login for registered users was discontinued on 14 September 2007. After that date you can no longer log in to your account.

I have received my books, but have not yet received the promotional posters and postcards

We regret that owing to a problem at the distributors some consignments of the posters and postcards have been delayed. The distributors are currently tackling this backlog.

Unfortunately orders for posters and postcards received after 16 July cannot be dispatched until the start of next term, because the distributors' policy is to deliver to schools only during term time, when receipt can be assured.
