...of your Chief Executive turns out to be really fascinating. This morning started off with an early start and the train down to London to attend the Children's Laureate announcement ceremony. This was in Centre Point on the 31st Floor, I don't think I have ever been so high before, and the views across London were spectacular, especially as the day wore on and the haze lifted. The excitement as the ceremony progressed was really tight. Michael Rosen, the retiring laureate, made an impassioned plea for the Campaign for the Book and the Just Read campaign (about to start) as well as thanking the many people who had helped make his tenure such a success. Andrew Motion was equally powerful in his comments about libraries and the value of the laureateship in promoting reading and engagement for children. Anthony Browne was announced as the new laureate to great applause, and stated his case that he wants everyone to play the Shape Game - to help unleash the creativity in us all... It seems very appropriate that the 6th laureate is an illustrator - as was the first!
That was followed by a very short notice interview at Sky News commenting on the news that Arnold Schwarzenegger thinks students in California should use the internet for text books - and not have to carry around those heavy books! Quite odd sitting in a remote studio talking to a camera (the main studio is in west London and I was in the centre!
Then off to south of the river to meet with some school librarians from IB schools - to see if there is more SLA can do, or something we can do differently that may be useful. If you're not an IB school - don't worry - we also want to meet with you about what we can do to improve our offer to you too. Tube strike later - wonder if I'll get back to my train station to get home? Library and Information Show in Birmingham on Wednesday and Thursday - see you there?
