First Story writers-in-residence for your school!

Inspire your students to write and build their confidence with First Story.

First Story is a national charity dedicated to reducing the gaps in literacy and attainment through creative writing, and they have places available on their residency programme for 2016-17.

Their programme places talented, professional writers in secondary schools serving low-income communities. First Story works alongside teachers and students to inspire new approaches towards literacy whilst fostering their creativity and communication skills.

By helping students find their voices through fun, intensive programmes with acclaimed writers, First Story raises aspirations and gives students the skills and confidence to achieve them.

The key elements of the First Story programme are:

  •  Writers-in-Residence: Engaging and intensive residencies in which students work with an acclaimed author, culminating in a professionally published anthology and a celebratory book launch event.
  • Regional Writing Events: Inspiring annual events in each of our regions, bringing First Story schools and writers together.
  • Young Writers’ Festival: A day of workshops, showcases and Q&A sessions for up to 1,000 young people in a prestigious location, all delivered by award-winning writers.
  • Competitions and Opportunities: Including our annual National Writing Competition (open to entries from all secondary state schools), plus other competitions, placement opportunities and additional ways for young writers to get their work published.
  • Continuing Professional Development: CPD tailored to the needs of writers, educators and literacy professionals.
  • Residential writing course: A select number of First Story students are awarded Fellowships to attend an intensive residential writing course with Arvon.
  •  Universities and Festivals: Events in collaboration with organisations around the country, giving young people the chance to write and perform together in new environments.

If you are a librarian in a school in/around any of the following areas, get in touch with First Story about how to place a writer-in-residence in your school for a whole year-long or term-long project:
