This year for International School Library Day we ran a competition inviting schools to send us a photo of how they celebrated the day in school. There were two categories, one for primary and one for secondary schools, and the best in each category have received £50 of book tokens for their library.
The winning primary school is Waycroft Primary in Stockwood, Bristol, who celebrated by holding a 'Don't be Backwards in Coming Forward to the Library - Except for on School Library Day' Day. Children were encouraged to wear their clothes backwards and read in an unusual way. One pupil chose to look at the Qu'ran "as it is written backwards". Good fun was had by all.
The winning secondary entry is from Northfield School and Sports College in Billingham who did the best thing they could think of for ISLD - they opened the doors for the first time to their brand new Library and Resources Centre! It was six years in the making, created from a wasted undercover outdoor space which linked the two halves of their main building. Just prior to the planned opening, they suffered a catastrophic freak flood which put things back for several months as they waited for insurance claims and replacement furniture and books but at last they have a designated space at the heart of the school where pupils can study, browse, borrow or just chill with a book.
We would like to offer our congratulations to the two worthy winners and hope they enjoy spending their book tokens.
