Last night saw the announcement of the winner of the Eleanor Farjeon Award for 2008 at the Unicorn Theatre in London. Chris Brown, the Reviews Editor of The School Librarian was presented with the award by Shannon Park, co-chair of CBC.
The Children's Book Circle (CBC) established the Eleanor Farjeon Award and hosted the event. The Eleanor Farjeon Award is made for distinguished service to the world of children's books and is given to someone whose commitment and contribution is deemed to be outstanding. The spirit of the award is to recognise the unsung heroes who contribute so much to every aspect of children's books.
The distinguished Shortlist included Chris, Michael Morpurgo, Elizabeth Hammill and Mary Briggs, joint founders of Seven Stories, the Children's Book History Society and David Wood the dramatist whose adaptations include 'Babe, the Sheep Pig' as well as 'The Tiger who Came to Tea'.
The guest speaker was Meg Rosoff who spoke about being a writer and it not being real work!
Chris then spoke of his career in teaching as a head teacher and his great interest in story for children. He remembered joining the SLA Hampshire Branch many years ago and the great help given to him by the SLA. He also told the audience about his work for the SLA since 1992 and as Reviews Editor since the death of Keith Barker and of course his general love of books and story. He also read an Eleanor Farjeon story.
