From 11 April, an opportunity has arisen for a qualified Librarian to manage our busy Library as a learning resource centre for the school, to support the whole school curriculum.
We are preferably looking for a colleague with at least three years’ experience, but applications from newly qualified Librarians with Library Assistant experience will be welcomed. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills with children and adults, and the ability to motivate others.  Working directly with our students is an integral part of the role.

Members' and Librarians' Days: Reading for Pleasure

Once again, Browns Books for Students are opening their doors to the SLA and providing us with a venue for the 2016 School Librarians Day.  The event will take place Wednesday 9th March and will include talks from -

  • Jarvis - Author/Illustrator of Lazy Dave and, soon to be published, Alan’s Big, Scary Teeth
  • Caroline Lawrence – Author of The Roman Mysteries and The PK Pinkerton Mysteries series
  • Joy Court, SLA Review Editor and Chair CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Awards Working Group, will give Practical R4P ideas for use in your school library
  • Claire Smith, BBfS Sales Manager and Shelly McCormick, BBfS Area Sales Manager, will outline how BrownsBfS can help customers find the RfP resources they are looking for.  

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and network throughout the day. 

The very full morning programme will be followed by lunch, book signing and the opportunity to browse and buy in Browns’ fabulous showroom.  A special discount of 25% will be applied to orders for books placed on the day.

Our course The Online Librarian, run by Bev Humphrey, will be held at Newton Rigg College, Penrith, Cumbria on 15 March 2016. The closing date is 29 February 2016. Reading for Pleasure using Accelerated Reader and other means: Bristol, 10 March 2016

CLOSING DATE - 25 FEBRUARY!!

Encouraging young people to read for pleasure is naturally at the forefront of all of our minds but it is not always an easy task.  There are so many other attractive pastimes open to our students that sometimes reading can seem a poor relation to computer games, etc. 

Our course Reading for Pleasure using Accelerated Reader and other means, run by Bev Humphrey, will be held at St Katherine's School, Ham Green, Pill, Bristol on 10 March 2016. The closing date is 25 February 2016.  By the end of the day, participants will have a better knowledge of the use of Accelerated Reader for users and updated information about books and genres.  They will return to their schools with a toolkit of online resources that can really help students of all ages get excited about picking up a book and bring reading into the digital world that they already inhabit.  

Key Audience: primary and secondary school staff (not necessarily using Accelerated Reader as this will only be one session)

Job Vacancies: Kew House School - Learning Resources Manager

March 2016

Kew House School opened with 60 students in September 2013 and already has over 280 today. The school will grow to full capacity over the next 5 or 6 years with circa 550+ students aged 11-18.

The school is seeking a full-time Learning Resources Manager to join the school in March 2016. The successful candidate will be a well-qualified, experienced and enthusiastic graduate. Melinda Salisbury's library blog and giveaway

Scholastic author Melinda, who has just published the second book, The Sleeping Prince, in her planned trilogy,  is a passioSleeping Princenate supporter of  school libraries as you can read for yourself in this exclusive blog:

"I can still remember the first book I ever took out of the school library. I wasn’t a very popular child; a combination of being a know-it-all teacher’s pet, and also not having the ‘right’ clothes, bag or pencil case, meant I spent a lot of time on my own at school.

Reading was a refuge.

But sadly for me, none of my family were big readers. My father read daily newspapers, and we had a TV guide magazine, but they preferred their stories on screen. So my access to books was limited to the few I got as presents at Christmas and occasionally, magically, from the visiting Scholastic Book Fair.

Imagine then, my joy when I discovered the school library.

Picture it: I’m perhaps eight, or nine, and near my classroom there’s another room, full of books. It’s been there the whole time I’ve been at school, and it’s called The Library. Sometimes we go in there and look at the books. We’re allowed to pull them from the shelf and take them to a table. We copy things out of them. We look up facts about the Ancient Egyptians, and rainforests in them. Then we put them back. We do this a couple of times every term, and I like this room a lot. It’s quiet, the other kids seem keen to avoid it, and, as previously mentioned, it’s full of books.

As rooms go, it’s pretty much all I’ve ever wanted.

The room has a guardian, she’s called The Librarian. She is frightening, but in a good way. She controls all of the books and that makes her awesome, in the very literal sense.

That too, is pretty much all I’ve ever wanted.

Imagine then, that somehow I end up in there one rainy lunchtime. I can’t remember the reason now, maybe I got bored of colouring in. Maybe I wanted to look something up for a project, or maybe I pretended I did. But for whatever reason, I went into the library and discovered that as well as having books full of facts, it had books full of stories too. I pulled one from the shelf and took it to the table. And I started to read it.

It was Jenny Nimmo’s The Snow Spider, and I picked it up because it was about magic and Wales, which were (and still are) two of my favourite things. In fact I’d just got back from a holiday in Wales with my Nan, and I was craving more misty spookiness, and it seemed to me that The Snow Spider was just the thing. I was right. I loved it. When the bell rang to signal the end of lunchtime, I was heartbroken, and I prayed it would rain the next day, and the next, and the next, so I could come back and finish it. Then I stood up and went to put it back.

“Do you want to take it home?” said the librarian.

You what?

I didn’t understand what she meant. So she explained. One of the main functions of the library was to lend books to readers so that they could take them home and read there. If I filled out a little card with my name and my classroom on, I could borrow two books, for two weeks. Then I had to bring them back and when I did, I could take two more.

I surveyed the vast kingdom of the library. Then I filled out the little card. And it was that small piece of magic that began my lifelong love affair with libraries. I wish so much I could remember the librarian’s name. She didn’t just give me books to read, she gave me the keys to a kingdom."

Reading for Pleasure - for Everyone!: Weybridge, Surrey, 16 March 2016

Our course Reading for Pleasure - for Everyone!, run by Alec Williams, will be held at St George's Junior School, Weybridge, Surrey on 16 March 2016.

This course looks at what reading for pleasure is; why it matters; and how to encourage it throughout the year, to every child, regardless of ability.  It includes a comprehensive survey of reading initiatives, and lots of practical ideas to use straight away.  Throughout, it spotlights examples of both materials and initiatives for SEN children.  Other areas covered will include boys' reading, transition, using media to stimulate reading and how ICT and ebooks feature in tomorrow's reading landscape. 

The closing date is 2 March 2016. Laugh Out Loud Book Awards

Scholastic have launched a new book award for funny books that literally make kids 'laugh out loud'. The Laugh OUt Loud Awards aka the Lollies, are made up of three categories; Best Laugh Out Loud ook for 6 - 8 year olds, est Laugh Out Loud Book for 9 - 13 year olds and Best Laugh OUt Loud Picture Book. The shortlist was announced this week and judges Michael Rosen, comedian Jenny Eclair, film producer Will Clark and Youtube sensation Amy Lee have chosen an excellent list that should tickle lots of funny bones . Votes are requested from classes of school children, voting closes on 10th June.

Writing Digital Decisions - a blog post by Amy Icke

Writing my SLA publication began back in June 2013 when serendipitously Geoff Dubber got in touch with Linda Kelley, Chair of SLA London, about our local SLA meeting which I was leading. I had been invited to talk about the research I was carrying out as part of my MA in Library and Information Studies on using e-resources in secondary school libraries. When Geoff asked if I wanted to write a Guideline on the topic, I was enthusiastic but was, from the outset, aware that this was a significant project to juggle with full-time work. I am delighted to have completed work on the Guideline and am grateful to the SLA and colleagues for all the support they've given me along the way.

With the Guideline published, it felt an appropriate time to reflect on the process and to consider the challenges and opportunity writing for publication presents.

  •           Keeping momentum

From start to finish, I have been working on this piece of research for four years and whilst I have really enjoyed it, it has been difficult to keep momentum, alongside balancing the demands of work and starting a new job. Timely emails from the SLA, support from colleagues and new found enthusiasm when working with case study contributors all helped to keep the project on track. It sounds obvious but breaking up the task into smaller manageable chunks and asking for feedback along the way also helped with motivation and focus. Unsurprisingly, the Guideline is written remotely and there's very little opportunity for face to face interaction, although chats on the phone and clear feedback by email were all helpful and kept the project moving forward.

  • Being all things to all people

I was aware that the basis for this Guideline was my MA dissertation and writing for academic study is a world away from writing a practical guideline designed to help the day to day work of fellow librarians. Establishing my own voice in the publication and gauging the tone was something I initially found difficult. Fortunately, Geoff brings many years of experience to the writing process and offered guidance to ensure the publication meets the needs and expectations of our intended authorship.

  • Taking a step back

As is the case with any piece of work of this kind you can certainly get too attached and fail at times to see the wood for the trees. It might be the case that you fail to explain terminology correctly or to give sufficient context to an example simply because to you it feels obvious. Having people who aren't familiar with the project read your work and cast an eye over the text is invaluable.

  • Keeping the conversation open and ongoing feedback

In many ways related to the above point, I appreciated feedback from a whole range of readers, including those not involved in librarianship. My head teacher, a former colleague working in IT, my previous line manager, the editorial team at the SLA and of course my long suffering parents all contributed to the final draft. Recognising their skills, interest and expertise added a richness to the text and I hope created a Guideline with breadth and variety as we all know that working in a school requires a whole team of people to be on board and support our work.

  • Transferring your vision to other contributors (for me, case study contributors)

I think when you embark on a project like this, informed by your own day to day work and primary research, you have a clear vision of the structure of the Guideline and how it fits together. It was my responsibility to communicate this effectively to my case study contributors and for them to have a good overview of how the publication would look and feel without burdening them with information overload. In the first instance I sent them a one side plan and contents page and then, responding to their request for more information, I sent them a draft so they were able to see how the publication would fit together. In the initial planning stages I had considered devising a proforma for the contributors so they had a consistent structure but on reflection I recognised that each one was different in their scope and it was better to give the authors as much autonomy as possible in the writing process.

I have thoroughly enjoyed writing the Guideline and very much hope it is of use to fellow librarians. There is some truly amazing and inspiring work going on in schools (one only has to read articles in the School Librarian or threads on SLN or posts on Heart of the School) and I would encourage anyone toying with the idea of publication to jump in and have a go. It has been a very rewarding process, I've learnt a huge amount along the way and I've hopefully produced something that is useful to others! My sincere thanks to the SLA for suggesting and supporting this Guideline and to all my colleagues and friends who have made it possible.
