A huge thank you to everyone who filled in our recent surveymonkey hosted questionnaire. We reached our total of just over 1000 responses much more quickly than we had anticipated. We will undertake a detailed analysis of the data as soon as possible, but here are a few of the headlines that jump out of the data on a first look.
The major variation came in the variety of budgets that school libraries have (taken from all repsondents) 11% had up to £500 pa; with both the £1-3,000 pa and £3-5,000 pa categories having 17% each. More light is thrown on school budgets when one considers that 34% of schools had less budget this year than last, with 48% having the same as last year (which, in effect, is a cut to the value of the rate of inflation), but only 18% had any increase on their budget year on year. Comparing budget figures with three years ago 38% had less money, 32% more and 30% the same as in 2009. Some of the free text comments show the real hardship these bald statistics hide -
The text comments also give a sense of a depressed picture in some school libraries -
With others obviously being valued as a major contributor to the success in their school -
SLA will undertake a detailed analysis of these results and will publish the results as soon as they can be made available. But this survey was intended as a snapshot, and this snap seems at first glance to be suggesting that all is not well across the whole of the school library world.
Available for school and library events in England, 2nd -6th July 2012. A WITCH IN LOVE publishes in July 2012 and is the second of three books following the critically acclaimed A WITCH IN WINTER suitable for age 12+, Ruth will talk about how she became an author, her inspirations for the Winter Trilogy and her research into witchcraft legend and old English. She can speak to groups of any size (up to 150 children). An event would need to be supported by book sales, access to a computer and projector and an experience of holding author visits is essential.

Tell The Siobhan Dowd Trust how you spread the Joy of Reading and win £1000 worth of books for your school!
The Siobhan Dowd Trust is proud to announce that Michael Rosen, Poet and ex-Childrens’ Laureate will be on the judging panel of a schools campaign, which is asking teachers and librarians for their ideas about how they encourage a love of books in their schools. The Trust will use the entries to build up a database of ideas which can be shared and swapped… and the ten best or most innovative ideas will receive £1000 worth of books selected by experts as some of the titles which every school should have one (or more) copies of. All schools in the UK are welcome to take part: nurseries through to sixth form, fee-paying schools are not eligible for a prize although they are welcome to share good ideas.
For details of how to enter (and the start of the database), please see the section for Teachers and Librarians - http://www.siobhandowdtrust.com/teachers-and-librarians
