International School Library Day

Last year's theme: Learning: powered by your school library

1st October 2007

Last year for ISLD we ran a competition inviting schools to send us a photo of how they celebrated the day in school. Full details and the winners can be found on our blog.

It was a day to shout about all of the good things going on in school libraries! Many school librarians worked hard to promote their school library within the school and the wider community.

The SLA created a new series of great posters, together with bookmarks and other resources to help librarians celebrate the day, including a specially-produced online video.  These will remain on the site for future use, and be added to next year.  Our thanks go to the schools, and the students, who allowed us to come and photograph them.

Founded in 1999 by the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL), ISLD was celebrated in most parts of the world on the fourth Monday in October. As this is almost always in school holidays in the UK, the SLA decided that we will celebrate it here on the first Monday in October instead. This is also the first day of the UK's National Children's Book Week, which includes National Poetry Day on the Thursday.

From 2008, ISLD will be celebrated throughout the world on the first Monday in October and truly International celebrations will be possible.
