Oxford University Press will provide free content from the Oxford English Dictionary Online, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, and the American National Biography Online to support students participating in the competition. The poems on the Poetry by Heart website include a number of links to OUP resources, encouraging students to explore in greater depth the language of the poems, and the lives of the poets who wrote them. Students can discover biographies of the poets using the Oxford DNB and ANB Online, and the OED entries help to explain the meaning and illustrate the usage of some of the older or more difficult words used in the selected poems. Check out some of the resources on the Partnership page, the teacher resources and the 'What's it all about?' pages.

Climate Week - 4 to 10 March 2013

Climate Week is a supercharged national campaign to inspire a new wave of action on climate change. It culminates in thousands of events and activities, planned by organisations from every sector of society. Showcasing real, practical ways to combat climate change, the campaign aims to renew our ambition to create a more sustainable, low-carbon future.

Climate Week is backed by every part of society - from the Prime Minister to Paul McCartney, the British Library to the Met Office, the TUC to the CBI, Girlguiding UK to the National Association of Head Teachers. During the last Climate Week, over 3,000 events were attended by half a million people across the UK for the second successive year.

The Climate Week Swap is a new element to the campaign for 2013, highlighting the positive impact that swapping books and other items can have on our environment. Run a swap event in your library, with your friends or at home and save resources from going to landfill. All those who register a Swap event will be entered into a draw to win a swap with a celebrity! Celebrities involved include Hugh Laurie, Andy Murray, Alesha Dixon and Frank Lampard.

The Climate Week Challenge is Britain’s biggest environmental competition. The Challenge is open to all ages, can be done on any day during Climate Week and it is completely free to take part. Over 130,000 people participated in 2012 in a challenge to come up with an idea to green a local space and make it more environmentally friendly. The entries were judged by a celebrity panel and the winners went on to take part in workshops organized by industry and business leaders. Winning designs included the Water Pebble – a device for the shower that flashes green when you first start washing, amber for when it’s time to rinse off and red for when it’s time to get out the shower.

Start thinking about how your library could get involved during Climate Week 2013. Whatever you are doing, make sure you register your event on the Climate Week website and help to create a national movement for change.

Young authors have been given top tips on writing by children's author Vivian French in a bid to help them win a competition - in which she is the prize! The short story competition is being run by library supplies company, LFC and is open to the first 250 primary schools who register, with each primary school allowed to submit a maximum of 10 entries - deadline to register 30 October (Competition entries deadline 30th November).

First prize is a visit to the winning school by Vivian. And in a bid to help entrants she's only too happy to explain what inspires her to write. Right now she is working on a number of projects. Her advice to young writers can be summed up in one word: "Read, read, READ - and if you find reading hard work, get someone to read to you - or listen to story CDs. There are lots in your local library." And she says, young writers shouldn't worry if the story doesn't feel right to begin with. "Keep writing … and then go back and change the bits you don't like. I sometimes have to rewrite stories over and over again. It sounds boring, but it isn't - your story will be LOADS better." Finally she urges all entrants to have fun. "If you enjoy writing your story, your reader will enjoy it too."
