Weekend Training Course

Despite the intermittent but occasionally torrential rain throughout the three days, this year's Weekend Course seems to have been timely and exactly what delegates were looking for.  Celebrating the SLA's 70th birthday, as well as quite a few other birthdays: Oxford University Press (100th) CILIP's Carnegie Medal (70th) and Kate Greenaway Medal (50th) as well as Orchard Books (21st), the title of the weekend could well have been Let Them Eat Cake!

"Thank you for the weekend - it is good to meet like minded people and share good practice with them."

"I learned a lot - thought the programme ticked all the right boxes!"

"Probably one of the best conferences I've been to."

"This is my first SLA weekend and I have enjoyed it greatly."

"A wonderful weekend. Every session a real gem. All were thought-provoking and entertaining.  Thank you. The organisation and administration was extremely professional."

Entitled The Future is Now, this annual event was held at the University of Nottingham from 22 - 24 June 2007.

Delegates were treated to a great array of Keynote Speakers, including:

"High quality and enthusiastic speakers. Many thanks."

In addition, a debate on Sunday morning certainly had us all fully engaged with the proposition: This House believes there is no issue too controversial to be included in a book for young people.

Proposed by Aidan Chambers, supported by Anne-Marie Tarter (SLA School Librarian of the Year 2006) and opposed by Sue Palmer, supported by Fay Dowding (SLA Honour List librarian 2007), passionate and sometimes heated debate continued over coffee and lunch, and probably on the train home too.

"Really enjoyed the debate - as coach of our school's debating society very pleased to see proper format used!"

Other authors at the weekend enlivened all our refreshment breaks:

In addition to the keynotes there were a host of excellent optional sessions on Saturday and we had a hard time deciding which to go to!

"Excellent and practical" said our delegates.

"All three workshops I attended were extremely informative and interesting, loads of food for thought and ideas."

"Very clear presentations, open discussions, much to go back and put into practice."

As usual there was an excellent exhibition of learning resources and equipment and a Bookshop run by Norfolk Children's Book Centre.  Thanks to all of these exhibitors and NCBC for taking part this year.

"Thank you for an enjoyable and as always informative conference".

"Brilliant as always - wonderful to meet up with so many ‘old'  friends and to make new ones."

"Brilliant - I am going home with lots of new ideas and inspiration"

"My first SLA weekend course and it will not be my last!  Everyone was so very friendly."
