Optional Sessions

(See programme above for timings)

  1. Last minute ideas
    Workshop
    Lynne Coppendale
Librarian, Danum School Technology College, Doncaster

Delegates should come ready to share their tales of success and woe, and leave with details of resources to access at no notice and what to include in a pack of activities and notices that can be used to meet last minute event/celebration requests.

  2. Change and inspire by 2010
    Workshop
    Geoff Dubber
    Freelance trainer & consultant

In what ways would you like your LRC to be more effective by the end of the decade?  Come and do some visionary thinking.  Mix some predictions about curriculum and ICT changes, add a dash of development planning and a pinch of personal navel gazing and see your vibrant and more effective library emerge by 2010.

  3. 'Please Miss, can we have some more?' Out of school hours at Willows High School
    Witness Session
    Debbie Carr
LRC Manager, Willows High School, Cardiff

Recent statistics have shown that pupils who attend extra study support or Out of School Hours activities improve their results by at least one grade. Find out how we have changed attitudes to learning in an inner city school.

  4. Using manga and graphic novels to encourage reading
    Seminar
    Dr Mel Gibson
Senior Lecturer, Media & Cultural Studies, University of Sunderland

Developing collections of Manga and Graphic novels can be a challenge. This session offers help in terms of selection, promotion and ways of working with students in relation to these books

  5. Leading and being led: pupil involvement in developing school libraries and learning spaces
    Workshop
    Jerry Hurst
    Independent Trainer and consultant

Set within the context of Every Child Matters, the DfES framework for Inspection and Youth Matters, this workshop will help you start to plan, implement and evaluate your partnership working with students and provide you with many practical ideas to take away.

  6. Nu txt - same old stories? (View Presentation)
    Workshop
    David Kendall
    Reading promoter

This workshop explores how the medium we use to read influences the reading experience. How can we use new media to engage and stimulate readers without pushing them away from books? The workshop covers the uses of email, mobile phones, and graphic novels to engage young people.

  7. The school library and the virtual learning environment (View Presentation)
    Seminar
    Marianne Bradnock
Head of Information Services, Dulwich College

A look at the ways in which the school library can use the collaboration and communication tools of a VLE to engage readers, promote services, and support learning. The seminar will also explore how, as information professionals, we can play a part in the organisation and management of a school's online learning platform.

  8. Working together to design school libraries of the future
    Workshop
    Helen Pallett
Retired, formerly Library and Information Services Manager, Djanogly City Academy, Nottingham

In this workshop we will look at the theory of building school libraries of the future, using the BSF DVD and consider the practicalities of working with the designers and suppliers.

  9. Getting out into the real world: alternative curricula and the school library (View Presentation)
    Seminar
    Lucy Pearson
Formerly College Librarian, John Cabot City Technology College, Bristol.

Alternative curricula are becoming increasing popular at secondary level and beyond. This session explores the opportunities and pitfalls of this development, with a case study on the development of information literacy through a 'competency curriculum'.

  10. Plagiarism: stemming the tide
    Workshop
    John Royce
    Library Director, Robert College, Istanbul

Detection and punishment are valid options.  In this workshop, however, we'll be looking mainly at tools and strategies for preventing plagiarism happening in the first place, and for promoting integrity and pride in honest achievement;  above all, we'll be looking at the roles the school librarian can play.

  11. Interactive whiteboards - functional or frivolous?
    Workshop
    Elspeth S Scott
(LRC Coordinator, Menzieshill High School, Dundee)

Interactive whiteboards are increasingly common in schools as a classroom tool - but do they have a place in a school library? This introductory workshop looks at some of the ways a board can enhance information literacy teaching and reader development and gives delegates a chance to consider its place in their own practice.
