Our course Supporting Diversity and Inclusion in School Libraries, run by Barbara Band, will be held at Wallsend Customer First Centre, 16 The Forum, Wallsend, Tyne and Wear NE28 8JR on 6 November 2019. The closing date is 22 October 2019. Bookings received by 26 September 2019 are eligible for a £15.00 discount.  Payment is not needed to qualify for the discount as long as an official order has been received.

Course Details:

Backed up by studies and research reports, this course will fully explore all the aspects of diversity and inclusion.  Areas covered will include - 

 

  • What is diversity and inclusion, what do we mean by this, exploring definitions, how they change and vary within societies

  • Exploring how diverse your school is - looking at the BAME. LGBTQ* and disability populations (including SEN and physical disabilities). I also look at the statistics relating to the UK population.

  • Reasons why we need to provide resources and services - covering both the legal as well as the mental health and well-being aspects.

  • Information needs of students

  • Resources available and how to use/promote them.

  • Looking at diversity and inclusion from a whole school ethos; ways to create opportunities within the curriculum.

  • What can librarians do to create a diverse and inclusive school library.

  • How to challenge racist/homophobic comments.

 

Participants will be given the background theory and statistics before moving onto practical ideas and examples they can take back into their own situations. They will be provided with lists of useful organisations, websites, sources of material and books, etc.

Trainer: Barbara Band

Barbara is a qualified Chartered Librarian offering school library, reading and literacy advice, support and training. She has over twenty five years’ experience delivering customer-focused services in educational environments, supported with project management and promotional skills gained in business and non-profit organisations.  A skilled communicator, Barbara delivers training, workshops and presentations to librarians and teaching staff. She has published regularly on reader development, library and literacy-related topics in both librarian and educational journals.

Passionate about the value and benefits that all libraries can bring to their community, Barbara is a former President of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), Chair of the School Library Association Central & East Berkshire branch and SLA Editor.
