Recently in the US a case of five teenagers who graffitied an historic building Virginia was reported. The judge handed down a reading sentence - a list of 35 books, and tasked the young people with reading one a month for a year and then writing a report on each book read.

This raised the hackles of many librarians, annoyed that reading was being seen as a punishment. However, all five of the teenagers successfully completed their reading and written assignments and two years later, none has reoffended, and all are still in education.
