Hampshire Information Book Award winner 2020

22 July 2020 Share

Congratulations to Ruth Owen and her book The Problem with Plastic (published by Ruby Tuesday Books) which has just won the Hampshire Information Book Award 2020, run by Hampshire School Library Service.

The purpose of the award is for pupils in Year 4 to learn how to use suitable language to critique the information books and explain their reasons. The children are given an opportunity to judge the books therefore providing a real purpose and a different aspect to their reading. It can also give children the opportunity to read books in which they may not normally pick up and take interest.

Schools were invited to take part in the award last October and the shortlisted books were sent out for the launch in January for voting at the end of March. However, due to schools having to close in the Spring term, the voting was delayed until the end of the Summer term.

Over 4,500 pupils from 90 Schools, across Hampshire took part in the award spending time reading, discussing, exploring, evaluating and best of all, thoroughly enjoying the five shortlisted, quality information books.  When it came time for voting there was a very clear winner - an obvious indication of the importance of this subject with young people.

Ruth Owen's comments on news of the award include "Thank you SO much for the news yesterday that The Problem with Plastic has won your award! We are absolutely thrilled....A BIG thank you to all the Year 4 pupils who read our book and voted for it. At Ruby Tuesday we are all passionate about the issue of plastic pollution and we are so pleased and proud that you enjoyed our book and chose it as the winner!... As a small publisher an award like this means the world to us!"

Other books included in the shortlist were:

• DK Findout! Birds by Ben Hoare

• Wild World by Angela McAllister

• The International Space Station by Clive Gifford

• Weather: Everything You Need to Know by Dr Jen Green

Some feedback from teachers included the following

• Just wanted to say a massive thank you for allowing us to take part in the Book awards this year. The children really loved all of the books.

• The pupils really enjoyed taking part and the teachers feel they learned some valuable skills as a result. Many thanks

• Our children absolutely loved it and thoroughly enjoyed looking through all of the books. Thank you for organising it!

• Thank you once again for a great experience. The kids have really enjoyed taking part. That being said, it was a very heavy ended (close) vote for us this year
