The shortlist for the 2020 Branford Boase Award was announced on Thursday 30th April 2020.
Since 2000, the Branford Boase has been awarded annually to the author of an outstanding debut novel for children. Uniquely, it also honours the editor of the winning title and highlights the importance of the editor in nurturing new talent.
Founded to commemorate author Henrietta Branford and influential Walker Books editor Wendy Boase, the Branford Boase Award is recognised as one of the most important awards in children’s books with an impressive record in identifying outstanding authors at the start of their careers.

The accompanying Henrietta Branford Writing Competition, the annual competition for young people which runs in conjunction with the Branford Boase Award, is now open and anyone under the age of 19 can enter.
Entrants are invited to finish a story begun by last year’s winner, author of I Am Thunder and 2020 World Book Day author Muhammad Khan.
Six winners will be invited to attend the Branford Boase Award celebration party in London in July (if it goes ahead then). There they will meet Muhammad Khan and the authors shortlisted for the 2020 award as well as editors, publishers, agents, and other professionals in this field. They will receive a copy of each of the books shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award and be able to have their books signed.
The closing date for the competition is Sunday 31st May 2020.
