2022 Excelsior Award shortlists announced

The UK book award for graphic novels and manga where teenagers decide the winner

Dating back to 2011, the Excelsior Award is the biggest, independent UK book award for graphic novels and manga where teenagers decide the winner. The award's overall goal is to encourage reading for pleasure amongst children and teenagers and raise the profile of graphic novels and manga amongst school librarians and teachers. 

The award is split up into four different shortlists:

  • Excelsior Award White, for students aged 9 and over (Key Stage 2) 
  • Excelsior Award Blue, for students aged 11 and over (Key Stage 3) 
  • Excelsior Award Red, for students aged 14 and over (Key Stage 4)
  • Excelsior Award Black, for students aged 16 and over (Sixth Form)

Each shortlist consists of three books (graphic novels and/or manga) that will cost no more than £45. 

Excelsior Award White 2022 Shortlist:

  • Georgia and the Edge of the World, written and illustrated by Robin Boyden (David Fickling Books)
  • The Mystery of the Meanest Teacher, written by Ryan North, illustrated by Derek Charm (DC)
  • The Wind in the Willows, written by Russel Punter (after Kenneth Grahame), illustrated by Xavier Bonet (Usborne)

Excelsior Award Blue 2022 Shortlist:

  • How to Pick a Fight, written and illustrated by Lara Kaminoff (Nobrow)
  • U.S.Agent: American Zealot, written by Christopher Priest, illustrated by Georges Jeanty (Marvel)
  • Miss Endicott, written by Jean-Christophe Derrien, illustrated by Xavier Fourquemin (Cinebook)

Excelsior Award Red 2022 Shortlist:

  • Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade, written by Simon Spurrier, illustrated by Sergio Fernandez Davila (Marvel)
  • Mama Akuma, written and illustrated by Kuzushiro (Yen Press)
  • Eternals: Only Death is Eternal, written by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Esad Ribic (Marvel)

Excelsior Award Black 2022 Shortlist:

  • Swan Song, written by Xavier Dorison and Emmanuel Herzet, illustrated by Cédric Babouche (Cinebook)
  • Orwell, written by Pierre Christin, illustrated by Sébastien Verdier (SelfMadeHero)
  • Barbalien: Red Planet, written by Jeff Lemire and Tate Brombal, illustrated by Gabriel Hernandez Walta (Dark Horse)
