The National Teen Book Club

29 March 2021 Share

A new virtual book club for ages 11-19.

In response to the closure of many libraries and schools over the past year due to COVID-19, educational equality charity Speakers for Schools has teamed up with Book Clubs in Schools and HarperCollins to create a virtual book club to help more young people discover a love of reading.

The National Teen Book Club is a UK-wide virtual book club for teenagers which aims to make reading more accessible and enjoyable for young people, as well as to inspire a new generation of creative writers.

The online platform allows young people to regularly come together safely online to discuss a particular book, and also provides them with the opportunity to hear from leading authors and creative professionals to help them explore their own creative ideas.

The platform has recently piloted with more than 150 schools and 1,500 young people reading I Have No Secrets by Penny Joelson, with a full version of the scheme to launch in June. The pilot placed particular focus on including readers that are usually harder to reach, with more than half of participants being boys, a third being from ethnic minorities and just under half on free school meals.

The National Teen Book club will open for all 11-19 year olds in the UK from June 2021. For more information and to register your interest, click here.
