We are delighted to share the news from Hampshire SLS that they have announced the winner of the Hampshire Picture Book Award for 2020: "What Do You Do if Your House is a Zoo?" Written by John Kelly and Illustrated by Steph Laberis, published by Little Tiger Books.

Over 6,000 pupils from 122 schools across Hampshire took part in the award and spent the spring term reading and sharing the four books on the shortlist.

The shortlist was:

  • What Do You Do if Your House is a Zoo? - Written by John Kelly and Illustrated by Steph Laberis published by Little Tiger.
  • The Little Green Hen - Written and Illustrated by Alison Murray published by Hachette Childrens.
  • Billy and the Dragon - Written and Illustrated by Nadia Shireen published by Penguin.
  • Field Trip to the Moon - Written by Jeanne Willis and Illustrated by John Hare published by Macmillan.

The books chosen for the shortlist were ones that were outstanding picture books with exciting stories that have great style and stretched the children's imagination, feelings and vocabulary.

Leilah Skelton from Little Tiger Press emailed a response to the news that What to do if your House is a Zoo won the Award: "Thank you SO much for this good news in what has become very dark times!"

Thank you to you and to all of your young voters. I hope that they can stay well and happy and well-read through all this. Many congratulations to John Kelly and Steph Laberis and our commiserations to the other celebrated authors and illustrators whose work was also shortlisted.
