Stars support schools writing competition for Celebration Day

06 June 2022 Share

The Day is marking Celebration Day with the launch of a UK-wide writing competition aimed at primary and secondary school pupils – and their teachers.

The Celebration Day Writing Competition challenges young people to interview the oldest person they know to find out who most influenced them as a child.

And the winning scribes will have their stories read out by renowned actors Lennie James, Gemma Arterton and Harriet Walter in a short film.

Celebration Day is a new, annual day of remembrance which encourages us to think of all the people who came before us and to pause our busy lives to reflect, remember and celebrate the lives of people who are no longer here.

The Day will be sending curriculum-linked competition packs to all schools, with resources tailored for primary and secondary teachers that include interview questions, writing tips and a poster. The deadline for the competition is 21 June.

“The Celebration Day writing competition will challenge young people from ages five to 18 to think of the people who came before them and to connect with those in the past who had an impact on the ones they love,” said The Day founder and editor Richard Addis.

“We would love schools to take part so their pupils can engage with those who shaped the world we live in and who made us who we are today.”

The competition requires entrants to submit a piece of writing in which pupils (and teachers) interview the oldest person they know about the person that influenced them most. It’s free to enter and there will be prizes for five student winners – one for each key stage – and one teacher.

The submission should be a maximum of 250 words for primary school pupils, or a maximum of 500 words for secondary school students and teachers. Individual prizes include an iPad and a £100 Amazon voucher, while £500 Amazon vouchers will go to the winners’ schools.

The first Celebration Day will be on June 26.

You can read all about the competition in the downloadable entry packs and enter via the online competition portal.
