Dr Saad Eskander, Director-General Iraq National Library and Archive

I have been privileged to attend the ceremony at the British Library tonight where Dr Eskander was presented with an Honorary Fellowship of CILIP. This was followed by a very moving and inspiring presentation by Dr Eskander about the state of the Library and Archive before and during the war in Iraq, and the wonderful transformation and refurbishment that is currently taking place in the Library - due in no small part to the generosity of the library community worldwide in providing equipment and expertise. You may be aware of the blog, hosted by the British Library website, that alerted the world to the library's plight, and also illustrated in graphic detail just how difficult protecting a nation's heritage can be.  To recap the diary visit  http://www.bl.uk/iraqdiary.html
