Based in the stunning setting of the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine’s Abbey – a World Heritage Site – The King’s School is one of the oldest and most prestigious Schools in the country with an enviable record of academic excellence and achievement.

The King’s School Library is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Deputy Librarian to support the Librarian to raise standards of academic literacy and to encourage the enjoyment of reading in all its forms.

The postholder will work 30 hours per week, for 38 weeks of the year 1:30pm to 7:30pm, Monday to Friday, although some flexibility is required.

Reporting directly to the Librarian, key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Librarian to develop and deliver a programme of outreach activities
  • Work with the Librarian to manage the collection and ensure appropriate coverage of subject areas
  • To monitor and evaluate collection use
  • Work with the Librarian to develop the library pages of the internet
  • Develop and manage the library’s promotional materials, including displays, the Bibliophile newsletter and social media
  • Supervise the team of evening and weekend Library Assistants

The successful candidate will have an ability to multi-task, adapt and innovate and will be a strong advocate for the Library and the opportunities it provides to the school community. 

Essential knowledge and experience required:

  • Experience of working in an educational institution or library
  • Knowledge and experience of cataloguing using library management software
  • Knowledge and experience of classification and academic research
  • Experience of academic research
  • Excellent understanding and working knowledge of Microsoft Office along with good general computer skills, including email
