could be forgiven for thinking that most young people were born with a mobile
phone in their hand, they are so attached to their devices - if only they were
as enthusiastic about reading as they are about updating their social media!
Promoting the joys of picking up a book and losing yourself in a story can seem
like an uphill struggle, if only we could make them see that books are just as
enthralling and exciting as the RPGs (role playing computer games) they play
for hours on end. There are ways we can dip a toe in the water of their digital
world however and use sites they love to use to get some sneaky book hooks into
them. Social media use is immensely popular and it wouldn’t appear that use of
sites such as Instagram has much scope for encouraging reading and yet there is
a huge book loving community of young people on the site that can be tapped
course focusses on ways to encourage reluctant readers, build reading stamina
and make reading ‘cool’ by using exciting online resources and apps to create a
buzz around books in your school. All resources shown are provided in a handout
to keep, with great video content, fantastic display suggestions and motivating
electronic ideas you can use to really get your pupils switched on to reading
for pleasure. Advice on how to use ebooks, QR codes and take part in live
author events included.
