This course explores
diversity and inclusion, both within the school library and from a whole-school
perspective; BAME, gender, LGBTQ+ and disabilities (including physical and
neurodiversity) will be covered. Delegates will examine how diverse their
schools are and what they already do before moving on to investigate how they
can improve what they offer. Based on recent research and studies, the
course will look at ways to create multiplicity within the curriculum, provide
information on resources (both hard copy and digital), how to promote
resources, and practical ideas that delegates can take back to their schools.
Areas covered will include –
* What is diversity and inclusion, what do we mean by this,
exploring definitions, how they change and vary within societie
* Exploring how diverse your school is - looking at the BAME. LGBTQ*
and disability populations (including SEN and physical disabilities)
including a look at the statistics relating to the UK population.
*Reasons why we need to provide resources and services - covering
both the legal as well as the mental health and well-being aspects.
* Information needs of students
* Resources available and how to use/promote them.
* Looking at diversity and inclusion from a whole school ethos; ways
to create opportunities within the curriculum
* What can librarians do to create a diverse and inclusive school
library.
* How to challenge racist/homophobic comments.
