DfE Reading Framework 2023

Date: 11 07 2023

The Department for Education has released a Reading Framework - July 2023 which brings the whole reading process together. From early years in primary through to key stage three, this links the importance of reading, talking, listening and writing and stresses the teamwork of teachers, librarians, leaders and carers working together to ensure children have a good experience of learning to read so reading for pleasure becomes a natural consequence.

School librarians are not only mentioned, but noted as influencers of children's reading, helping pupils choose suitable titles. Daily time for stories should be a priority in early years. Book club should have space on the timetable - in primary weekly and in secondary at least fortnightly - and not as part of the English curriculum. The importance of having new stock to refresh the selection is mentioned and time to browse needs to be programmed into the school day.

Public Libraries and School Library Services are noted for the services they offer schools and a central school library with a range of stock to cover diverse interests.

For anyone interested in reading for pleasure this document is a must read.
