Establishing a Primary School Library
This publication will be particularly relevant for any education professionals based in a primary school planning to establish a school library, or those looking to enhance their existing one.

Written by Dawn Woods, Member Development Librarian for the SLA and former manager of Worcestershire County Council School Library Services, the publication shares a wealth of experience through chapters such as ‘What role does a school library play?’ and ‘Setting goals in a development plan’, as well as practical advice on what furniture, resources and technology are required.

There is also a useful section on using the library for learning/information literacy, plus the appendices include a budget planner, a health and safety checklist and some games to help promote the library to pupils.

Reader Review
'Establishing a Primary School Library' is an invaluable resource to anyone who is starting out as a primary school librarian, or wanting to put forward a case for a school library to school leaders. It gathers together evidence, research and data to support the undeniable belief that a school library is not only desirable, but necessary in primary settings. It also provides guidance on every aspect of the process; from building a room to choosing bookshelves, to stocking those shelves, to planning the library's output. With information that can be selected and used as required, or adapted for a number of settings and contexts. The booklet gives templates for school paperwork such as development plans or funding requests, as well as games and activities that can be used, and where to find resources, ideas or support; with information that can be picked out as required, or adapted for a number of settings and contexts. The best thing that this publication does, however, is answer the head-scratching questions of "where on earth do I start?" and "how do I actually make that happen?". Rebecca Campling
